L’Arno, le sue sponde, i borghi sorti in prossimità della grande via d’acqua, costituiscono un mondo a parte nella Toscana della mezzadria. Il fiume è origine di mestieri artigianali, rari in altre aree regionali: navicellai, mugnai, renaioli, funai, fornaciai, cavatori, scalpellini, etc. La peculiarità produttiva, paesaggistica e insediativa dell’ambito fluviale illustra con particolare efficacia il rapporto fertile tra facies locorum e labor artificum nelle società premoderne.
The Arno river, its banks and villages that sprang up near the great waterway, constitute a separate world in the Tuscan sharecropping (mezzadria) society. The river is the source of a rich range of crafts, rare in other regional areas: sailors, millers, ropemakers, brickmakers, quarrymen, stonecutters, etc. The distinctive productivity, landscape and settlements in this fluvial environment illustrate particularly effectively the fertile relationship between locorum facies and labor artificum in premodern societies.
