Abstract

The Bible preserves a magnificent series of images from the agricultural world, starting from the Book of Genesis, when God takes the man and put him into the Garden of Eden “to till it and to take care of it”. This term suggests a kind of relationship with the cultivated soil that recalls respect and devotion. For this reason the land, which also needs to lie fallow at the right time, not as sterile but waiting for the soil to make natural fruits, available for the “poor of God’s people”, becomes very similar to the the farmers, getting joyful, in case of heavy rain or sad in case of war or dryness. Particularly in the New Testament, the agricultural images, at the core of Jesus Christ preaching, have the purpose to show the apostolic mission. In fact it is managed with the farmer wisdom, which is able to sow and to water but can wait for plant growing at the right time, without his own action, too. Moreover also God is called the Farmer and he knows the grafting art too, though he’s upsetting the terms of the ordinaries rules.
