Il benessere animale è una condizione largamente auspicata negli allevamenti, ma che pone non poche difficoltà anche sul piano scientifico. Esse riguardano in particolare una più precisa definizione dei rapporti fra stress e benessere, fra salute e benessere, nonché dei meccanismi di induzione del dolore e della sofferenza. Da ciò può infatti emergere una miglior comprensione del fenomeno – di non facile lettura poiché si presta a interpretazioni di tipo antropomorfico condizionabili da fattori di tipo socio-filosofico – da cui la possibilità di sua valutazione oggettiva negli allevamenti. Una simile valutazione, oggi possibile grazie a modelli che privilegiano gli indicatori “animal based”, potrebbe costituire una garanzia: – per i consumatori che chiedono certezze circa i modi con cui gli alimenti vengono prodotti; – per gli allevatori che auspicano indicazioni sui criteri da adottare per migliorare le condizioni di vita dei loro animali e quindi l’efficienza degli allevamenti.
Scientific aspects of animal welfare. The welfare of farm animals is if growing interest for consumers of developed countries, but several are the constraints, also from scientific point of view. Namely they regard a more precise definition of the relationship between stress and welfare, as well as health and welfare; but a better knowledge of the mechanisms leading to pain and suffering is also essential. This could in fact allow a better understanding of the phenomenon and therefore its objective evaluation in the farms, avoiding the risk of an anthropomorphic approach affected by socio-phylosophycal influences. Such an evaluation is now possible thanks to models that give priority to the animal based indexes and can ensure a better guaranty for: – the consumers who demand certainty on the friendly ways to produce foods of animal origin; – the farmers who hope useful suggestions to improve the life conditions of their animals and thus the efficiency of farms.
