Abstract

Italy was, for e long succession of centuries, the Bel Paese, Nice Country which every cultivated people of the Continent was obliged to visit during the grand tour which the writer, the philosopher, the politician had to refer about in a special diary. Printed or manuscripted, his diary would have enriched the library whose the most famous pieces are the works of Montaigne and Göethe. One of the preeminent elements of the beauty of Italy were the walls that defined the terraces of the hills which, to obtain wheat and olive oil, were shaped from Valle d’Aosta to Lipari Islands. The beauty of the Peninsula doesn’t exist any more, radically destroyed by an urbanization whose anarchy was not allowed in any country of Europe, as in France, in Germany and in England industrialization was realized without destroying the agrarian landscapes of the country regions. After the movement of the center of Italian economy from hilly regions to plains, terraces of Italian hilly regions are tumbling under the pressure of climatic elements and of modern excavation machines, they will soon be cancelled from Italian landscape and from Italian memory. One can state that it is a special duty of agrarian culture to leave to the future generations the story and the images of one of the characteristic faces of the ancient Bel Paese. The Author concludes hoping that under the direction of the Accademia dei Georgofili an inventory would be started of the terraces of all the Peninsula, the purpose that until now neither the naturalistic culture, nor the historical or the architectonic ones proved the necessity to sketch.
