Abstract

«We are on the edge of a global climate crisis, to avoid which we need agreed measures at global level». These are the words used by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on March 12th at the Municipal Theater of Belluno during the commemoration of the 3 Venetian victims of the Vaia storm. The European Environment Agency in the report n ° 15 of 2017 “Change adaptation and disaster risk reduction in Europe”, reports that, in the period from 1980 to 2015, the economic losses for the 33 European countries caused by “extreme weather- and climate- related events” amount to about 433 billion euros. 2018 ended up being the hottest year both in Italy and in Europe from 1880 to today with an average temperature increase exceeding 1.5 °, therefore above the threshold identified as a limit not to be exceeded in the famous agreement signed by the COP 21 in Paris in 2015. From 27 to 30 October 2018 the Vaia storm affected the entire Italian peninsula causing 16 deaths and significant damage. The main meteorological characteristics of Vaia are described, highlighting the strong temperature and pressure gradients that have arisen; unusual values that fall within a framework of a changing climate, causing accentuations in the conditions of instability and thus favoring ever more intense phenomena. The latter are characterized not only by particularly intense rains but also by particularly strong winds with gusts that reach values equal to or greater than the hurricane category on the Beaufort scale. The article analyzes some types of events describing the different meteorological characteristics and consequently the different impacts they can have on the territory.
