The paper presents the most relevant results obtained by the Authors on the effects induced by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria, alone or in combination, in plants subjected to biotic stresses (pathogenic fungi and phytoplasmas). The mechanisms involved in the plant defense responses are tentatively explained. The results here described confirm and suggest the possible use of soil beneficial microorganisms as biocontrol agents of plant diseases.
