Abstract

The commercial trade of nursery products has recently grown considerably. This growth is due to the entrance into this market of non-traditional countries as well buyers and as suppliers. Nurseries wishing to operate into the international markets must necessarily offer a wider range of products through the expansion of their productions. When supplying for themselves, nurseries get to buy liners and finished products. Specialised nurseries supply the propagating materials. These materials go through severe phytopatological controls and therefore are very rarely carriers of infections. On the other hand finished products are often grown wildly into nature or they are coming from non-specialised cultivations or even coming from different fields of production than nurseries, becoming dangerous carriers of pathogens and pests. The key aspects of this market are today the certified quality of the species correspondence and the phytosanitary control. This aspect is today of vital importance not only for the market but also for the added value they confer to the product itself. The number of nurseries using only certified propagating materials is growing day by day. To reach these quality standards however it is needed a great collaboration between the nurseries and the regional inspectors of SFR (Servizi Fitosanitari Regionali) and the adoption of the voluntary ‘Regional Certifying System’, it’s realised an increase in consortium and private companies. Finally it is necessary to uniform the legislation on an international basis to make sure that the controls are equally carried over in the different countries.
