A cinquant’anni dalla sua nascita (1912) l’Istituto Sperimentale di Frutticoltura ha fatto un bilancio della sua attività di costituzione di nuove varietà per la frutticoltura italiana, pubblicando una speciale monografia che riporta, di ciascuna, il profilo pomologico e la foto. La rivoluzione genetica, di cui ha beneficiato la nostra frutticoltura, deriva in buona parte dall’affermazione di numerose varietà (circa 180), specificamente di fragole, pesche-nettarine, pere e mele. I meriti di questo straordinario successo sono dei numerosi ricercatori che, ciascuno per la propria specialità, coordinati dal prof. C. Fideghelli, direttore dell’Istituto e breeder lui stesso, hanno saputo sviluppare, valorizzando la vocazionalità delle varie regioni. Alcune di queste varietà, specialmente pesche, costituite dallo stesso Fideghelli (es. Venus e Roma) si sono affermate anche all’estero.
After 50 years of activity the Experimental Institute of Fruit Growing, belonging to Ministry of Agriculture in Rome, has published a monographic book illustrating each of the main varieties of fruit species, released from 1912 to 2012 by the Institute. The genetic revolution, in favour of the Italian fruit culture, has been largely due to the contribute of many specialized researchers and breeders coordinated by prof. Carlo Fideghelli. About 180 new varieties have been released, mostly of peaches/nectarines, pears, apples and strawberries. Great merits for this excellent results must be recognized to prof. Carlo Fideghelli, Director of the Institute, who coordinated all the specific breeding programs. Another merit of the Institute was the selection process carried out directly for each species, in the most suitable climatic areas of the country. Therefore, giving advantages to each region. Several varieties achieved great success also abroad, like Venus and Rome Star peaches.
